RSW Progress Report

This is my first progress report for Ready, Set, Write!

I’ve been doing okay, been moving slowly but steadily. I’ve been having issues with fatigue, and today my eye pain required a loopy pill (probably because of the storm we had earlier. It’s such a weird thing). So I’ve been hanging in there.

Here is the rundown on how week 1 went:

How I did on last week’s goal(s)

Pretty decently. I got some writing done on Covenant and Fireborn (although I got a bit stuck and that stalled me for a bit), got more outlining done on Ever Touched (and now have named characters! And a better name for my winged beings!), and discovered an issue with Survivor chapter 1 that will requite me to redo the entire outline.

On non-writing stuffs, I’m down to two names for the Etsy shop. Still reading books for review. Began organizing my office.

  • My goal(s) for this week

~1,000 words or more on Covenant
~Figure out exactly how the next scene in Fireborn should go, and write the damn thing
~Begin redoing Survivor outline/work on Survivor this Sunday
~Outline more on Ever Touched
~Decide on a name for Etsy shop!
~Find 35mm manual camera
~Call camera shop to see if they repair 35mm cameras
~Finish proofing sample and send it back to author
~Put together list for an appointment

A favorite line from my story OR a word or phrase that sums up what I wrote/revised: Slow and steady

The biggest challenge I faced this week (ie finding time to write, getting sick, having writer’s block, etc): The biggest challenge for me was realizing that after rewriting chapter 1 on Survivor, I’d completely ignored my outline and notes, and my memory is not as good as I thought. And also that 2007!Erin who first wrote the outline knew nothing about how to progress a story in each scene. So, I must rework the outline and the chapter, ugh.

  • Something I love about my WIP: Survivor is an interesting book because when I first started it, it was one thing, but through the writing, it became something totally different. It’s psychological horror with mental illness, an evil doctor, and twins. And the twins thing is kind of cool b/c I’m fascinated by them. And it dawned on me just recently (11 years after starting the book) that the twins mirror my younger sister and I somewhat. We aren’t twins, but we’re close in age and have been mistaken for twins many times.

It shall be a busy week methinks!

#ROW80 Check-in 6/10/15

Getting down to the wire now! Holy crap!

I’VE STARTED WRITING AGAIN AND IT FEELS AMAZING

Granted, I’m doing maybe 500 words a day at the most, and I’m keeping a low goal so I don’t scare off my muse. Here’s what I’ve been working on:

Fireborn – Restarted this one today. 267 words, just getting back into the swing. Draft up to 14,510 words.
Survivor – Sadly, was on hold while I camped and did other things. This Sunday I plan on jumping back in.
Ever Touched – Started a file on it in HiveMind. Planning on doing some loose outlining soon.**
Covenant – The new project. Again, few hundred words a day, no pressure. Draft is up to 2,234 words now.

Is that it? I think so.

**Something’s hanging me up on this. Without getting into too many details…I have two directions I could go with this. One is having the protagonist and a clone, and have them be connected and be sort of…psychically sensing each other? Then later the clone will have to cope with the fact that she’s a clone and why she exists. Or, I could just have the protagonist experiencing everything without a clone or psychic connection. Thing is, the clone idea is much more complex, but intrigues me in a few different ways (she is also the love interest of the hero). The other way is less intriguing, but…cleaner I guess? I’m trying to figure out if it’s just a matter of CLONE ZOMG COOL MOAR SCI-FI STUFF or if it’s a valid (and good) idea. Anyone care to weigh in?

The FT books are sci-fi but also fantasy, so a clone would fit into the mix (and with genetic engineering, yeah!) but this is the first time I’m using a psychic connection and precognition which is both sci-fi and fantasy IMO. I believe it still works within the constraints of the FT world. (I had scrapped the original idea due to not fitting, and the 2nd idea…this is my third.)

So once I nail that down, I can proceed.

(I would like to at least start this book this year. Trying to avoid a 3-yr gap between books.)

Chocolate consumption update! Wowza, I can really pack it in! Lots and lots of chocolate. And olive oil. (Don’t ask. It’s work-related and not that exciting).

Eye has been yucky today and yesterday, coinciding with a storm front coming through. Yay. (Working on getting answers.)

I think that’s it?

Heard this lyric and the muse is chewing on it: I will burn the sky.

#ROW80 Check-in 5/20/15 – Stories and computers and camping oh my!

I haven’t been around much, mainly because my 2-year-old computer’s monitor died and could not be saved. Alas, poor computer, you have now joined the 6 others that came before you. RIP.

Yeah. So I decided to buy another one, because I need a computer, and the one I had before the one that died is 7 years old and a mess. I stopped using it after 2 days of fighting with it. Not my idea of a great time. I basically got the same type of puter I had except with a bigger hard drive for HALF the price. SCORE. It finally came on Friday (after being sent to the wrong post office) and naturally, because this is MY life, I couldn’t touch it b/c hubby and I were leaving for a camping trip.

(Also? About 98% of my info was backed up in various locations…except my GT book cover. I have the JPG but not the original Photoshop file. I have an online backup service which backs up everything continuously, but the zip file I downloaded is not working so I’m a bit worried. Everything else is fine, though).

So. Camping was nice. We were only about an hour away from home. Had a bit of an issue pulling out one of the beds in the pop-up — it kept getting stuck! But hubby took care of that, and all was well. I did a TON of reading and even wrote! Handwrote no less! (That’s another story). Since I had almost no internet service, I had to get creative. I’d hoped to at least keep up on my email, but no go.

So I finished the rough draft of Changeling: The Faerie Dance, which needs to be typed up and revised. Due June 1st, first day of my vacation AND the first week-long camping trip we have planned (second is in August). I also worked on an older project that wasn’t gelling for like, over a year (no kidding!) and somehow it finally came together and I wrote about 1k. It’s called Covenant, and it combines the Chinese custom of ghost marriage with Egyptian mythology. I love it, but could never quite figure it out until last weekend. So that’s a thing. 🙂

As for everything else, nada. Still in a funk due to my eye, and still feel too frazzled. I had to put off a bunch of promo commitments due to the computer dying and I’m still trying to get caught up. That’s about it.

I miss daily writing. I hope to start again soon.

#ROW80 Check-in 5/6/15

I’ve been taking a break from writing, but I’m starting to feel the urge again, which is great.

What isn’t great is my eye. It’s been hurting badly all week, and I just found out that the special eye institute I was hoping to get into doesn’t think they can help me. 😦 With them out of the running, I literally have no one else to go to. (Unless I want to get third opinions, which the lady at the institute suggested but…I am SO done with testing and crap. I dunno. Maybe I’ll change my mind.)

So I’ve been in a bit of a funk about this, and feeling terrible. Granted, it could be worse, right? But it feels so unsurmountable — trying to work, trying to write, trying to live — and, well, I’m letting myself feel bad. For a bit. Then, well…I’ll get back to business. I always do. 😀

I had an idea about Flamebound, my paranormal romance novella that I’d like to expand into a novel. So that’s happening along with all the other whisperings of my muse.

This Sunday I plan on working on Survivor. I may try to slip some Fireborn words in sometime, but no pressure.

Our weather over here’s been rainy, but it has started to get nicer. I’m hoping for a nice weekend for camping (next week! So close!).

How’s everyone doing this week?

#ROW80 Check-in 1/21/15

Still moving along.  I had severe eye pain last night and didn’t want to take anything for it (too late in the day — it’d mess me up for work) so I took last night off writing.  Didn’t want to, but I just couldn’t think with my eye and head hurting so much.

But today, I was back at it!  I’m heading toward the halfway point, and it’s getting interesting.  While I know the basics of what I want to happen, a lot of the character development has been done on the fly.  I also discovered something about the male lead, Rick.  Hmmm.  This should complicate things, but in a good way. ~evil grin~

Stats!

Project: Fireborn
Word written: 9,101 words (3,229 words since the last check-in)
Words remaining: 5,899 words
What’s happening: More investigating, and something has just come to light
What’s next: Stonewalling.  More investigation.  Another murder.

Project: Survivor
Work done since last check-in: Nothing on paper yet, but I have been considering changing one aspect of the plot to make it more personal and tighter.  So that’s a thing.

Feeling: Honestly? Stressed out because today was a bad day at work
Eye report: Horrible. 😦
Back report: Twinge-y.  Took a minor fall in the parking lot next door to my work and I am praying it’s nothing serious.
Chocolate consumption: Oddly enough, not a lot! A WW snack and hot chocolate last night.  More hot chocolate tonight, I think!
Soundtrack: Krypteria

#ROW80 Check-in 5/14/14

I was doing really well until my wrist started bothering me. I think I may need more time to rest it, so I’m not sure how much writing I’ll get done between now and Sunday. I won’t push it.

So, Awaken Me is almost to 5k. It’s going pretty well, and I’m happy with it so far. I think adding the cat shifters was a good move. I wanted to try to write something I would be intrigued by — while still keeping it erotica. Hopefully, this is a good thing and my muse isn’t messing with me. 😉 (She does that sometimes).

On the HDR front, I have pics! Beautiful pics, actually! And I’ve been playing with them digitally, but unfortunately I don’t have enough bracketed ones to make a good practice set for this method. So I need to take more bracketed pictures. (I didn’t want to get too bogged down in method while I was shooting on Saturday — I wanted to be carefree and not worry much, but still have a few possibilities for HDR.) I’m not very happy with the HDR results, but I suppose I just need practice. It will come. But either way, I love the pictures I got and enjoyed shooting them immensely. They are of a beautiful Catholic church near us that’s always lit up at night. I’d tried, unsuccessfully, to do night shots of it before, but that’s when I was using a manual 35mm camera. Many, many moons ago. Now it’s a ton easier, although in some ways I miss the old days of having to figure it all out on my own.

I started photography in 1996 or so. (This isn’t counting my childhood, where I took a ton of pictures just for fun using one of those cassette cameras – god, I feel old!) And I’ve done so much since then, it’s not even funny. But every shoot is a new experience, and I learn so much. And it has never lost its magic. Need to do more. The muse is begging me.

So, stats!

Words written: 2,090 on Awaken Me / 4,600 words total
Words remaining: 30,400 words
What’s happening: The MC, Beth, is in major shock.
What’s next: Her initiation, I believe
Feeling: Crappy. Wrist + migraine no worky
Eye report: Ugh, not good!
Chocolate consumption: A lot. I stopped counting.
Mood music: Within Temptation – Hydra album

#ROW80 Check-in the Twenty-Second

The past few days have been very difficult as both my eye and my back have been excruciatingly painful.  Haven’t been sleeping well.  I’ve been living on loopy pills and motrin.  So I haven’t been able to do a lot of writing.  I’m hoping I feel better soon so I can get back to it.

On Thursday I’m seeing my primary doc for my physical and to see what’s going on with my back.  I’m starting to get really worried, as the pain hasn’t changed and it’s been almost 4 weeks.  Even factoring in the fibro, it should be feeling at least a bit better by now.  I’m hoping it’s nothing serious.  I don’t need any more problems.

I am most definitely joining Round 2 of ROW80.  I like that it keeps me accountable and producing.

Stats!

Running total: 37,578 words (so close to 40k!)
Words remaining:  +2,578 words
Body count: No possessions at the moment, but we’ll see…
Feeling: Not great, but not too bad at the moment
Eye report: Horrendous pain till I took my loopy pill
Back report: Severe pain…:(

#ROW80 Check-in the Seventeenth – Moving along

Working still a bit slowly, but I’ve been working hard at it and I have a plan for the next few scenes. Getting up to the first big thing and frankly, I can’t wait. This is where the crap hits the fan.

I’ve been fighting back issues, eye issues, and fatigue these past few days. I’ve been working at less the 100% and it shows in my progress. I’ve decided to try harder. Because this book needs to written. (And I am so damn close to 35k I can taste it!)

(I’ve also discovered HDR photography — stay tuned for updates on that. I want to start shooting immediately, but need to check both my main cameras to see if they’ll work. But the images are stunning. You’ll see.)

Running total: 28,518 words
Words remaining: 6,482 words (SO CLOSE!)
Body count: Possession is imminent. La, la, la.
Feeling: Yucky.
Eye report: Hurting, but no loopy pills are required tonight.
Back report: Twinge-y. Took motrin with dinner, hoping it does the trick.

#ROW80 Check-in the Sixteenth – Slow progress

Here we are again! Well, I haven’t been feeling the best — I hurt my back on Tuesday and my eye pain has been worse than usual. So I’ve been struggling with having enough brainz to write, let alone get a lot written, which was my goal. Ugh. Sometimes my body works against me.

But I have made some progress, which is better than none. I have a direction for Grave Touched — I was a bit stuck last night. I also have an idea of a first scene for Soulfire, so as soon as I feel up to it, I’m going to write it. I was going to start it yesterday, but decided against it.

I also worked on getting my Fey Touched manuscript (I just love using that word! It’s so writerly!) formatted for Smashwords, something that’s been on my to-do list forever. Due to mistake, I ended up stripping all my italics out of the file. And since the bulk of it was already formatted, I didn’t want to start from scratch. I’m still learning. So last night I began the fun, monotonous process of italicizing each word that needed it, one at a time. I’m about 40 manuscript pages in (about 70 pages if you’re using the finished book). I got a bit distracted reading it — it’s been 2 years since I self-pubbed it, and it was fun to get back into the story again. I still love it madly. So that’s happening. I’ll be putting it up on Smashwords at a discounted price, so stay tuned.

Here’s hoping for more progress this week.

Running total: 25,925 words
Words remaining: 9,075 words (under 10k! Yay!)
Body count: Someone’s about to get possessed. *evil grin*
Feeling: A touch better than yesterday which is good.
Eye report: Very painful lately, but at the moment is just a little twinge-y. Hope it stays that way!
